The 2012 RSA Conference begins next week in San Francisco. Thursday, March 1st, CAD’s Jennifer Minella will be hosting the Peer2Peer session on BYOD in the enterprise. If you are heading that way, this session is not to be missed (BYOD is the buzzword of the year it seems!).

Doubts, Dread and Decisions: Dealing with BYOD in the Enterprise P2P

Session: P2P-306A (Peer2Peer Track)
Moderator: Jennifer Jabbusch Minella, CISO, Infrastructure Security Specialist, CAD, Inc.
Time: Thursday, March 1, 3:20 PM, 50 minutes in Room 110

Overview: With the consumerization of wireless and networked devices, the concept of BYOD (bring your own device) has most enterprise security teams scrambling for guidance. In this P2P session, attendees will exchange ideas on integrating unmanaged and personal devices in the enterprise environment, and discuss ways to secure assets, protect resources, manage use and create policies to govern it all.

More BYOD goodness: Jennifer rounded-up a list of other BYOD sessions at RSA next week and started a collection of BYOD resources on her blog, Security Uncorked.

Many of CAD’s partners will have booths at the RSA conference this year, be sure to stop by and say hello (and tell them CAD sent you!):

Now that the holidays are over, how are you handling the onslaught of new wireless devices on your network? If you’re in the majority, you’re probably still trying to figure out how to offer secure, reliable network access for employees and guests, most of whom are bringing personal devices into the office. Meru Networks and Carolina Advanced Digital, Inc. are teaming up to provide the technical info on how Meru Networks’ wireless technology is structurally different, more reliable and more cost-effective than any other competitor in the market.

Meru Networks’ wireless shines in high density, BYOD, and highly mobile environments. They’ve solved wireless issues in huge healthcare, education, hospitality, and retail accounts (among others). Of course, CAD has Meru certified engineers on staff and a wide range of successful Meru implementations.

In this webinar, you’ll learn how to:

Design a wireless infrastructure that is scalable, secure and supports increased density.

Deliver quick, easy and secure network access to guests and employee-owned devices on the enterprise network.

Reduce IT overhead and burden by simplifying network access and provisioning for guests.

You may have seen these in our newsletter or on our Facebook page, but here are some great Meru Networks videos to introduce you to the technology and how it works:

Criminals using hacking techniques can cost corporations, governments, and individuals millions of dollars each year. While the media focuses on the grand-scale attacks that have been planned for months and executed by teams and countries, there are thousands more that aren’t broadcast. Low Tech Hacking focuses on the everyday hacks that, while simple in nature, actually add up to the most significant losses. Attackers are using common techniques like social engineering, wireless hacking, and targeting and surveillance to gain access to valuable data. This book contains detailed descriptions of potential threats and vulnerabilities, many of which the majority of the information systems world may be unaware. Author Jack Wiles spent many years as an inside penetration testing team leader, proving these threats and vulnerabilities exist and their countermeasures work. His contributing authors are among the best in the world in their respective areas of expertise.

Research firm IHS predicts that more than 25 million tablets will ship in Q4 2011, driven by huge demand during the holiday season.

The tablet market is expected to reach 72 million in 2012, and 287 million in 2015 – a clear signal that the BYOD “trend” is becoming the new business reality. Why? Many of these iPads will end up in the hands of employees, who are increasingly demanding that they be able to use the device of their choice on corporate networks. IT departments need to be prepared on Dec. 26th when millions of employees show up with their new devices, looking for network access.

In this webinar, Bradford Networks CTO Frank Andrus will outline the 10 immediate steps that IT needs to take to implement a secure BYOD process.

By the end of the webinar, you will have learned how to devise a BYOD policy that covers everything from what OS versions should be allowed, to providing network access based on role and device type.

The holidays are fast approaching. Is your organization ready to support all the new wireless gadgets that Santa will be bringing? If you’re in the majority, then you’re probably still trying to figure out how to offer secure network access for guests and employees bringing personal devices in to the office. On December 6th, there’s a webinar for a new Identity Manager solution that allows you to provide secure device access management to support guest users and B.Y.O.D. (bring your own device) for your existing wired and wireless networks.

The Identity Manager technology provides a complete solution for:

Guest Lifecycle Management – Creating, notifying, authenticating and reporting on external users accessing a guest network.

Provisioning devices for network access – Smart Connect enables you to allow users to automatically set up their devices for secure network access using 802.1x without the need for any IT involvement.

Identity Manager is a new solution from Meru Networks. Meru recently acquired Identity Networks, provider of secure guest and device access management.

What’s really great about Identity Manager is that it’s NOT LIMITED TO MERU USERS. This technology can be overlaid on ANY existing wired or wireless network.

Chris Carey, IT Administrator at Bellarmine College Preparatory in CA, and Frank Pileiro, District Technology Coordinator for Linwood School District in NJ, will be sharing their experience using Identity Manager during the webinar. It’s always helpful to hear honest feedback from people using the product. Niall El-Assaad, Director of Product Management at Meru, will also be presenting so you can ask detailed technical questions.

Meru Networks Webinar
“Why every IT Director Should be Afraid of the Holidays”
Date: Tuesday, December 6th
Time: 1:00pm PST / 4:00pm EST
Plus: One attendee will win an Amazon Kindle Fire at the end of the webinar!

CARY, NC (September 6, 2011) — Carolina Advanced Digital, Inc. (CAD), an industry leader of IT infrastructure, management and security solutions, has donated HP equipment for a wireless network at Camp John J. Barnhardt, one of the premier Boy Scouts of America camps in the southeast.

Camp Barnhardt is located on the 1,000 acre William C. Cannon Scout Reservation on Badin Lake in Stanly County, NC. The camp is open year-round and maintained by the Central North Carolina Council of the Boy Scouts of America, made up of eight districts from seven counties.

Edward Watson, WAN Engineer for Cabarrus County Schools, is a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader of units that attend Camp Barnhardt. Watson knew the value a wireless network would bring to the camp and approached CAD with idea of working together.

“The wireless network will serve as a great learning tool for the Scouts, as well as tremendously help the daily needs of the camp,” said Watson. “From tracking potentially dangerous afternoon thunderstorms to helping a Scout send pictures to his mom, the wireless network will keep us connected and informed.”

Scouts will have the opportunity to earn their Computer Merit Badge by learning how the wireless network works and doing research using the network.

Watson also described a far-reaching benefit of the wireless network—skyping with Scouts from around the world. Recently his unit used Skype to talk with an airman deployed in Afghanistan who is setting up Scout troops in the midst of the action. The wireless network will enable them to have more learning experiences like this in the future.

“We’re proud to help such an upstanding organization as the Boy Scouts of America,” said John Jabbusch, founder and chief engineer at CAD. “Wireless is essential to communication today, and we’re happy to contribute equipment to aid the camp and help the Scouts learn how it all works.”

Watson plans to install the network before the Cub Scouts’ annual Gold Rush event in October.
